Destiny “DJ” Newberry was named to lead the Girls Basketball program at Virginia High School after serving as an assistant coach at Lebanon High School for the past two years. Prior to her time at Lebanon, she was a graduate assistant at SWVCC.
DJ hails from Rogersville, TN, where she was a four-year player at Cherokee HS. She continued her playing career at Southwest Community College, where she played for Coach Thad Lambert, who was recently selected as head coach of the Lebanon girls.
In addition to serving as the varsity girls basketball head coach, she will be employed by BVPS as a speech-language pathologist assistant while she completes her program.
“I am excited to join BVPS as the Head Girls Basketball Coach and to continue building on the strong tradition of Bearcat Girls Basketball,” stated Newberry. “I am grateful for this opportunity and look forward to getting to know the girls and becoming a part of the Bearcat Community.”
Kevin Timmons recently resigned as the girls’ coach at VHS to take over the boys’ program, replacing Julius Galishaw.
“We went through an extensive process to fill our basketball positions and spoke with many great candidates, but at the end of the day, it was important to find the best fit for both programs, and we believe we have done that with these hires,” said Bearcat Athletic Director Brad Harper. “We are excited about the future of both our programs, with longtime girls coach Kevin Timmons now leading the boys program and bringing DJ Newberry into the Bearcat family as our new head girls basketball coach.”
