Southwest Virginia Community College has been awarded up to $151,000 in Workforce Financial Aid funding from the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission to support students pursuing workforce training and high-demand career pathways during the 2026–2027 academic year.
The funding will provide scholarship assistance to eligible students enrolled in short-term, non-credit workforce credential programs, as well as G3 and non-G3 eligible programs in STEM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Healthcare) and Advanced Manufacturing fields.
Eligible SWCC students will be selected by the college’s Financial Aid Office based on factors, criteria, and program priorities established by the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission.
The award is expected to help cover tuition costs for approximately 77 students enrolled in Workforce Financial Aid Priority 1–3 programs, increasing access to training opportunities that prepare individuals for in-demand careers across Southwest Virginia.
“This funding helps remove financial barriers, giving participants greater access to the training and credentials needed for career success,” said James Dye, Dean of Applied Technologies at Southwest Virginia Community College.
The Workforce Financial Aid program is designed to strengthen the region’s workforce by supporting students as they gain the skills, certifications, and credentials needed to meet employer demand in key industry sectors. By reducing the financial burden associated with education and training, the funding enables more individuals to pursue career advancement and contribute to the economic vitality of the Tobacco Region.
