The Russell County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) announced today that Laura Gilmer will lead the organization as executive director. Gilmer joined the IDA earlier this year, succeeding Ernie McFadden.
“Russell County has remarkable assets: hardworking, entrepreneurial people, beautiful natural amenities, an authentic culture and a strategic location in the region,” said Gilmer. “Together, they give us a real opportunity to grow our economy, and I’m honored to work alongside the IDA Board, organizational partners and the communities we serve to lead this important work.”
Gilmer outlined three early priorities: strengthening the IDA’s capacity to manage grants and loans, increasing awareness of funding opportunities that support businesses in Russell County and the region, and developing a more robust economic development strategy for the county.
Gilmer brings deep experience in rural economies, agriculture and public-private partnerships. Her work has focused on bringing industry, government and community stakeholders together to create durable economic outcomes.
In leadership roles with organizations including Wolfe’s Neck Center for Agriculture & the Environment and the National Association of Conservation Districts, she has managed large federal grant portfolios, led multi-partner initiatives and developed strategies that support innovation and investment in rural economies.
“Laura has spent her career bringing businesses, public institutions, nonprofits and rural communities together to get results,” said Ron Blankenship, chair of the Russell County IDA. “She understands that community needs belong at the center of economic development, and the IDA Board is glad to have her leading this work for Russell County.”
Gilmer holds a bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. She lives on a farm near Belfast with her family.
The IDA supports several active projects at various stages, all aimed at promoting the safety, health, welfare, convenience or prosperity of the inhabitants of the Commonwealth. Under authority granted by the Code of Virginia, the IDA administers grant and loan packages that support local businesses and job creation.
The IDA Board meets at 5:30 on the second Thursday of each month in the Jefferson Room of the Southwest Virginia Community College Higher Education Center. Meetings are open to the public.
