A free library has been set up on the grounds of Castlewood High School.
Known as the Blue Devil Little Free Library, the library will offer books for students, family members, and the community as a whole.
The library came about when math instructor Brittany Hale was awarded a Russell County Mini Grant. Jonah McMican helped construct and install the library.
According to a statement from CHS, “She is an avid reader and believes everyone should have access to books. Last year, she started a student book club, and those students are still meeting throughout the summer to read and discuss books together.”
Each side of the library celebrates the joy of reading in a unique way.
The side facing the elementary school features signs pointing to beloved childhood destinations like The Hundred Acre Wood, Who-ville, and Wonderland.
The side facing the high school highlights locations from popular modern books, including Erid, from “Project Hail Mary” and Arrakis of “Dune”.
The side facing the new gym pays tribute to the community with signs for local favorites like Blue Devil Circle and Honey Branch.
Located at the flag pole entrance of CHS, the library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
“During the school year, we simply ask that visitors avoid stopping by during 7:30–8:45 a.m., when students are being dropped off, and 3:00–4:00 p.m., when buses are loading and students are leaving for the day,” the statement read.
The top shelf is stocked with children’s and middle grade books, while the bottom shelf includes adult books and magazines. Adult books meaning books such as Danielle Steele, C.J. Box, and Janet Evanovich to name a few.
Those interested in visiting are encouraged to browse and borrow a book, leave a book, or return one when finished and exchange it for another.
“We also welcome donations of like new or gently used books to help keep the library stocked for readers of all ages,” the statement said.“If the library is full, please contact Mrs. Hale and she will gladly hold your books until there is space for them.”
