A dual primary will be held on August 4 as Democrats will select a candidate for the Ninth District’s Congressional seat and Republicans will select a candidate for the United States Senate.
Douglas Crockett, Adam Murphy and Joy Powers are vying for the Democrat nomination.
Crockett is a native of Wythe County who currently is living in Abingdon. He worked for 38 years as an ordained elder with the United Methodist Church.

Murphy is a 2017 graduate of Western Governors University with a Bachelor of Science in Software Development. He designs software solutions in the field of investments and derivatives.

Powers is a Bedford farmer. She has also served as the Superintendent of the Bedford County Fair, a member of the Bedford County Agricultural Economic Development Advisory Board, Founder of Restore the Harvest and is a small business owner.

The winner of the primary will face Republican incumbent Morgan Griffith in November.
Three Republicans are on the ballot for the party’s nomination for the United States Senate. They include Bert Mizusawa, Kim Farington, and David Williams.
Mizusawa is a retired Major General of the United States Army, a former senior executive in the federal government, and a leader in law, national security, and public service.

Williams was deployed to Iraq twice as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, where he led a platoon of Marines. Following his military service, David began a diplomatic career advancing American interests across Latin America in the U.S. Department of State.
He then joined the CIA as a Case Officer, where he coordinated security and intelligence related matters and served as a Chief of Station. David continues his service to date as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Marine Corps Reserves.
