A post was made on Facebook last week that stated the Russell County Board of Supervisors had voted to close all unmanned dumpster sites. Since the post was made, rumors have spread throughout the county that the sites were closing effective July 1.
While the board discussed trash concerns during its June 15 budget workshop, no vote was taken to close any dumpster sites.
During the workshop, Russell County Administrator Lonzo Lester said the dumpster site at the former Oak Grove Elementary School will be sold, along with the rest of the property. “That leaves Drill and Finney,” he said.
According to Lester, the Drill site is one of the busiest in the county. “We pull more tonnage out of Drill than we do Lebanon,” he explained.
Part of the problem with the Drill site is trash allegedly coming from Buchanan County. It has long been suspected by officials that Buchanan County residents use the Drill site to dump their trash.
“Buchanan County knows it and they laugh about it,” Lester said.
Lester added Russell County has the lowest tipping and tire fees than any of its neighbors. Board members agreed to study fees issue and discuss it during a future meeting.
