The three Democrats vying for the party’s nomination for the Ninth District’s seat in Congress will be in the region this week for a candidate forum.
Voices of Southwest Virginia: Your Questions. Their Answers is scheduled for July 15 at Fuller Perry Hall at the Tazewell County Fairgrounds in Tazewell.
Registration and refreshments will be at 6:00 p.m. with the forum starting at 6:30 p.m.
The Democratic Committees of Russell, Bland, Buchanan and Tazewell Counties are hosting the event.
The forum will provide voters an opportunity to hear directly from the candidates as they discuss issues impacting Southwest Virginia and answer questions submitted by community members. The event is designed to help voters make an informed decision before the Democratic primary, which is scheduled for August 4.
Candidates on the ballot for the primary are Douglas Crockett, Adam Murphy and Joy Powers.
Crockett is a native of Wythe County who is currently resides in Abingdon. He worked for 38 years as an ordained elder with the United Methodist Church.

Murphy is a 2017 graduate of Western Governor’s University with a Bachelors of Science in Software Development. He designs software solutions in the field of investments and derivatives.

Powers is a Bedford farmer. She has also served as the Superintendent of the Bedford County Fair, a member of the Bedford County Agricultural Economic Development Advisory Board, Founder of Restore the Harvest and is a small business owner.

The winner of the primary will face Republican incumbent Morgan Griffith in November.
